Valentines Day in Guatemala, February 2015

1 Corinthians 13:13: "And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love."

In Guatemala, as in many Latin countries, Valentine's Day, or Día del Cariño, is a day on which love is expressed and chocolates are exchanged. However, it also serves as a broader holiday on which people show their love for friends, family, and coworkers.

During one of our Friday night Bible studies with the youth group from the orphanage Fundaninos, we read a biblical perspective on love from 1 Corinthians 13 and discussed how they could live it out in their daily lives. We hope and pray to teach these young women the value of living the life God intends for them through a proper understanding of His Word. Our current study focuses on the book of Esther and its relevance to their lives.

Woodworking and Engineering

Our Skills for Life woodworking program at Fundaninos is thriving, and we are proud of our students' hard work and dedication. Our advanced students are working on "Carpentry 2.0" projects. Through our pre-engineering class, they are learning vector graphics design using 3-D modeling software and manufacturing and production with a CNC router in our workshop.

This year, we welcomed three younger boys into our class, and the girls are helping them learn the basics of using the tools. It is lovely to see the multiplication of our efforts as the students we have taught are now teaching others.

Culinary Arts

The Culinary Arts classes that Sharie teaches to the teenage girls at Fundaninos are progressing well, and the food is delicious. We printed a cookbook for each student this year, and they will work through it this semester.

They are learning to cook delicious, healthy, and affordable dishes. We plan to host several bake sales throughout the year. We are looking for employment opportunities for the girls once they graduate.

Afterschool Programs

At the Precious Moments School and Orphanage, our vocational training center is now open all week for afternoon classes. Our two teachers instruct the students in computer skills, tutoring, prayer, and spiritual guidance. We are glad to see their progress.

Please pray for the children here, as it is a very high-crime location where students have been lost to gang violence. Your prayers and support are crucial as we strive to positively impact their lives.
