Missionary News, June 2015

A crucial part of our missionary work in Guatemala is our Friday night class with the girls from the orphanage Fundaninos. Lately, we have been placing an emphasis on life preparedness. We recently finished a Bible study series on Christian work ethic. We had the girls evaluate their lives and discuss the areas where they thought they could improve.

We were blessed to have one of our former students come to address the class one evening. Sandra Tax was one of our first students in the orphanage where we worked. Over the years, we taught, counseled, and assisted her as she finished high school and graduated with a degree in teaching. She has been working for us at the Precious Moments School as a teacher for the past two years. The talk she gave to the girls was incredibly impactful. She has the unique perspective of having been where they have been. She shared with them about choices and consequences, faith, forgiveness, and seeing the hand of God in their lives. The girls listened in silence and paid constant attention to what she said, and we believe that the things she shared with them will take root in their lives.

Independence Program

One area that Tim has been spending a lot of time in lately is helping the girls who have come of age at Fundaninos start stepping out on their own. We are finding them jobs, teaching them the transportation routes, working with their bosses, counseling them in their work, and helping them learn what is required to be desirable employees. Please keep them in your prayers, as it has been a challenging transition.

Culinary Arts

As usual, Sharie has been doing an excellent job teaching cooking and baking classes to the girls at the orphanage. We are so very proud of them and the effort they have put into their cooking. Besides learning to cook great food, Sharie spends valuable time with them, talking, laughing, and loving them.

Thanks to our great teachers at the school, all the 2nd through 6th-grade students receive regular computer classes in our computer training center. 24 students have also enrolled in the afternoon tutoring and computer classes.

We currently have two girls from our independence program at Fundaninos working at the school and assisting with the computer classes.

CNC Engineering and Woodworking

In our CNC Engineering classes at the orphanage Fundaninos, the students have been learning industrial design and production techniques. Last month, we received our first commercial order for signs from a local company, MYMSA. The students are doing all the designing, cutting, and finishing themselves.

We also use this program to teach the students money management and basic business skills as they receive all the profits from the sale and must deduct the cost of the materials, calculate their labor costs, and place a minimum amount in savings.
